On August 7, global commodity markets traded cautiously as investors focused on the upcoming U.S. July Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) Report, one of the most closely watched economic releases for assessing the strength of the U.S. labor market and the future path of Federal Reserve policy. Market consensus expects 80K new jobs to be added, compared with the previous reading of 57K.
In the precious metals market, spot gold remained well supported and is on track for its strongest weekly performance since January. Investors continue to view gold as a hedge against economic uncertainty while awaiting the NFP results. A weaker-than-expected employment report could reinforce expectations for future Federal Reserve rate cuts, providing additional support for gold. Conversely, stronger-than-expected data may strengthen the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields, limiting gold's upside.
In the energy market, WTI crude oil remained supported as geopolitical risks in the Middle East continued to influence market sentiment. Investors are closely monitoring diplomatic developments involving Iran and the security of shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. Although concerns over supply disruptions have eased compared with previous weeks, lingering geopolitical uncertainty continues to provide a floor for oil prices.
In the foreign exchange market, the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) traded near 99.95, while the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield remained elevated. Investors refrained from taking aggressive positions ahead of the NFP release, as the employment report is expected to play a key role in shaping expectations for future Federal Reserve interest rate decisions.
Market Summary
Market attention has shifted from geopolitical headlines toward whether incoming U.S. economic data will validate current market expectations. Beyond the headline NFP figure, investors will also closely monitor the unemployment rate and average hourly earnings, as these indicators could significantly influence the outlook for Federal Reserve policy and drive short-term movements in the U.S. dollar, gold, crude oil, and broader financial markets.
