South Korea is seeking new sources of support for its next phase of economic growth. President Lee Jae Myung said on Wednesday that, amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence and intensifying global technological competition, South Korea needs to cultivate new growth engines in advance, reduce the risks associated with the economys long-term reliance on a single dominant industry, and transform frontier technologies into sources of future national competitiveness.
Over the past several quarters, the global AI investment boom has continued to drive demand for high-end memory chips and related semiconductors, significantly boosting revenue for South Korean chipmakers and once again making semiconductors a major pillar of the economy and exports. However, the South Korean government also recognizes the highly cyclical nature of the chip industry. The current period of strong semiconductor growth provides both time and resources for economic transformation, creating an opportunity to prepare for the next wave of growth.
To this end, the South Korean government has proposed seven seed projects, identifying small modular reactors, nuclear fusion, renewable energy, quantum technology, aerospace, advanced biotechnology, and supply chains for advanced materials and components as priority areas. These industries have high technological barriers and are closely linked to energy security, technological capabilities, and supply chain stability, leading the government to elevate them to the level of national strategic priorities.
This strategy also reflects South Koreas assessment of changes in global technological competition. Artificial intelligence is accelerating the integration of energy, materials, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing, while competition among countries is expanding from individual products to core technologies and complete industrial chains. Although fields such as quantum technology, nuclear fusion, and aerospace may still require time to achieve large-scale commercialization, establishing technological expertise and a strong talent base at an early stage could provide a greater opportunity to secure a leading position in future industries.
Lee Jae Myung believes that emerging technologies are evolving at an increasingly rapid pace, and that missing a critical stage of development would significantly raise the cost of catching up later. Therefore, in addition to increasing support for research and development, the government will need to promote the commercialization of scientific research, encourage corporate participation, and strengthen the cultivation of science and engineering talent so that frontier technologies can be transformed into genuine industrial capabilities.
South Korea‘s presidential office convened around 60 government officials, researchers, and relevant experts on Wednesday to discuss specific implementation plans. Looking ahead, if the seven industries receive sustained policy and capital support, South Korea could gradually develop a more diversified economic structure in which semiconductors, energy technology, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, and other sectors contribute jointly to growth. This could reduce the economy’s dependence on semiconductor cycles while stimulating R&D investment and the expansion of high-end industrial value chains.
From FXTRADING‘s perspective, South Korea’s decision to develop seven future industries at this stage represents an effort to use the current semiconductor upcycle to lay the groundwork for economic restructuring. In the short term, these frontier industries are unlikely to generate large-scale economic contributions quickly. However, if technological commercialization progresses successfully over the medium to long term, they could broaden South Koreas high-value-added industrial base, strengthen self-reliance in energy, critical materials, and core supply chains, and provide additional support for future economic growth.
